Why kidney failure?

What is called kidney failure? It is said that kidney failure occurs only when one kidney does not work, or when both kidneys stop working, it is called kidney failure? Many may not know this. When both the kidneys stop working, it is called kidney failure. If one kidney is working, it is enough.

The function of the kidneys is to purify the blood in the body. It works to purify the blood by selecting the disorders and useless substances in the blood. The selected waste products are sent by the kidneys to the urinary bladder, which is expelled from the body through urine. If the kidney cannot do this, dialysis should be done. Kidney failure is also known as kidney failure.

What is dialysis?
Dialysis is a method of artificially helping the work of the kidneys after kidney failure or failure. The work done by a healthy kidney is done artificially by a machine during dialysis.

Dialysis is generally of two types – hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Hemodialysis is a method of blood purification with the help of an artificial kidney (hemodialyzer). Peritoneal dialysis is a method of blood purification by placing a plastic tube (catheter) in the abdomen through surgery and sending water (dialysate) to it.

When the kidney loses 85 to 90 percent of its capacity, dialysis is needed. It is also the last stage of kidney failure.

What does dialysis do to the body?
In case of kidney failure, dialysis balances the amount of disorder in the body. When the kidneys do not work, the amount of disorders in the body increases as the blood is not purified. But after dialysis, the impurities in the body like waste, unnecessary salt and water cannot accumulate. It allows only a safe amount of chemicals like potassium, sodium and bicarbonate to remain in the blood. It also balances the blood pressure.

The duration of dialysis depends on the type of kidney problem. Some patients with ‘acute’ kidney failure recover after treatment. In this case, dialysis is done for a short time only to help in the treatment of the kidney. Dialysis is not necessary after the kidney is in normal condition. But in the case of ‘chronic’ (end-stage) kidney failure, it cannot return to normal after treatment. In this case, regular dialysis is required throughout life.

The thing to understand is that dialysis is not a treatment. After dialysis, the kidney does not return to normal, ie it does not cure the kidney disease. It only does some of the work that the kidneys do. In such cases, kidney transplant is not an option. Otherwise, you will have to undergo dialysis for the rest of your life.

How long does a person on dialysis live?
After kidney failure, if it is not possible to transplant a new kidney, you will have to undergo dialysis for the rest of your life. How long a person on dialysis lives depends on their other health conditions and the vigilance they take with their kidney treatments. Dialysis patients live an average of 5 to 10 years. But there are examples of some people living for 20 to 30 years.

Can a person on dialysis work?
Yes, but only light work. Generally, after getting used to dialysis, people usually go back to work. A person undergoing dialysis should not do heavy work such as lifting heavy objects.

How long does it take?
Kidney failure can be treated in two ways. A dialysis and a second transplant. If dialysis is to be done, it has to be done for life, two to three times a week. Dialysis costs Rs 2,500 a time, which is borne by the government.

It is enough to do kidney transplant once. No need for dialysis after transplant. There is no fee to be paid for kidney transplant in government hospitals, but for other tests, it may cost around one and a half lakh rupees. You have to take medicine for life.

Where is it done?
In Nepal, 70 percent of kidney transplants are done at Shaheed Dharmabhakt Organ Transplant Center Bhaktapur. So far, 1000 patients have been transplanted there. Apart from this, kidney transplants are also done at Veer Hospital and Trivi Teaching Hospital Kathmandu.

The government of Nepal provides free treatment to patients with kidney failure. Kidney transplant costing four and a half lakh rupees is done free of cost. For this, other tests cost about one and a half lakh rupees. It also has a stage. Going from step one to step five can take up to two years.
